WHAT IS MMA?
Recently, New Zealanders have been informed about a product called Methyl Methacrylate (MMA).
Methyl Methacrylate is an ingredient that was commonly used in early manufacturing techniques of nail acrylics.
Other uses for Methyl Methacrylate are dentures, prosthetic devices, methacrylate resins and plastics used for advertising signs, lighting fixtures, skylights, plumbing and bathroom fixtures.
In the early 1970’s the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States of America banned the manufacture of MMA-containing acrylic liquids (monomers) used in creating fingernail enhancements.
Their reason for this was that they received numerous complaints of serious nail damage, nail loss, soreness, infections and skin allergies.
Other symptoms associated with the use of MMA on fingernails include respiratory problems and deformities in nail growth, liver and kidney dysfunction.
While its strength is the attraction to the product, it is not safe to use on fingernails.
WHAT IS EMA?
Ethyl Methacrylate (EMA) is the safe alternative to MMA in our acrylic liquid monomers. The difference of EMA to MMA is only three atoms.
Yet this small difference is all it takes to make EMA safer.
HOW DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE?
Technicians not willing to show which brand of products they use.
Distinctive odour (super strong, apparently similar smell to onions).
Technicians using dust/ventilation masks. (Some technicians choose to wear masks although they do not use MMA).
Acrylics cannot be removed with approved removal substances.
Acrylics difficult to file which can result in nail damage as technician mistakenly files into natural nail. An electric file is used to remove acrylics.
Acrylics that are very hard with no “give”. When the nail is knocked, the MMA product causes the acrylic and natural nail to break with severe damage.
Prices for acrylics can be much less, due to the cost of MMA against the more expensive EMA.
WHY ARE YOU BEING INFORMED NOW?
Although acrylic nails have been in New Zealand for more than 15 years, the consumer has not had to worry about MMA in their acrylic liquids.
The products were distributed in New Zealand by companies who bought MMA-free products. It is only recently, with the growth of the nail industry here that the use of products manufactured overseas by other companies have been emerging into the industry.
For safety of both client and technician, Total Elegance uses OPI acrylic products which are MMA-FREE.
